Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, where we ladies met an age ago, is also home to one of the best independently-owned bookstores nationwide: Prairie Lights. It’s a place where you can browse expertly-curated fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Where you can lose hours on the magical floor of children’s books. Where you can enjoy a cappuccino and coffee cake — or a glass of wine and a plate of cheeses — while reading or writing in the beautiful cafe. Where you can nestle shoulder to shoulder with dozens of folks all listening intently to wonderful readings that they constantly host. It often feels like a well-kept secret, so I was ecstatic to see this article. If you’re ever in Iowa City, set aside an afternoon to soak up this little oasis — and more than a few dollars to spend on the treasures you’ll inevitably find. Or, in the meantime, visit them online.

I miss Prairie Lights.
Sometimes I miss it, too, even though I can be there in ten minutes.
